Overview
Ambubachi Mela is the annual festival at the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, Guwahati (usually around June 21–25, during Ashara). It marks the yearly menstruation of the Goddess Kamakhya, observed as a powerful symbol of fertility and creative energy. The inner sanctum remains closed for three days; public rites, kirtans and mela activities occur outside, and when the temple reopens on the fourth day devotees receive sacred cloth pieces (raktavastra) and darshan.
Key dates (typical)
- Festival window: around June 21–25 (depends on the lunar/Assamese calendar). Expect exact dates announced by temple authorities annually.
Practical guidance for devotees and visitors
- Travel & accommodation
- Book transport and lodging well in advance — hotels fill quickly during Ambubachi. Plan 2–6 weeks ahead for festival-period travel.
- Temple access & darshan
- The main sanctum is closed for three days; darshan resumes on the fourth day with heavy crowds. Plan to arrive early on reopening day for a better chance at darshan.
- Authorized rituals, prasad and offerings
- Only authorized Shebait priests perform temple pujas and distribute the raktavastra (red cloth pieces). Do not accept claims of official prasad or puja from unauthorized intermediaries.
- Conduct & respect
- Follow temple norms: modest dress, respectful behavior, and local customs. During the three closed days observe the festival’s devotional atmosphere outside the temple (kirtan, bhajan). Respect priests’ roles and ritual privacy.
- Photography & recording
- Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Kamakhya temple complex; do not attempt photos of the sanctum or peeth. kamakhya.org

- Expect large crowds and camping around Nilachal Hill. Carry water, basic first-aid, and any required medicines. Take precautions in monsoon weather (rain gear, secure shelter). Keep valuables safe and use official assistance/contact numbers if needed.
- Scams & misleading claims
- Beware services or apps offering “official” online pujas or paid guarantees for raktavastra/darshan — verify with temple authorities. Official contact details are published by the temple administration.
- Local transport & arrival
- Nearest rail: Kamakhya or Guwahati stations; nearest airport: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati). Use licensed taxis/auto-rickshaws; allow extra time for festival traffic.
- Special groups
- Sadhus, tantric practitioners and large groups attend—be prepared for diverse ritual expressions and crowds; follow directions from temple volunteers and police for queueing and crowd control.

- For authoritative guidance (dates, timings, assistance) contact temple administration through official channels on the Kamakhya websites. Use published phone numbers and email addresses to confirm current rules and schedules.
